Because everyone’s mouth is different, the frequency depends on your gum health and risk factors. For many people, a hygiene visit every six months helps maintain healthy gums and prevent disease. If you’ve had gum disease, heavy plaque, or other risk factors (smoking, diabetes, implants, etc.), we may recommend more frequent visits - maybe every 3-4 months to keep things stable and under control.

We begin by taking the time to understand your oral hygiene habits, medical background, and lifestyle. Because gum health is personal, and prevention starts with understanding your risks. Every tooth is then assessed with six-point periodontal charting, and we stain plaque to measure how much is present. You'll receive a precise plaque score and bleeding score - clear indicators of current gum health and areas to improve.

From there, we carry out tailored periodontal debridement, removing plaque and bacteria from above and below the gum line as needed. We also remove surface stains, using advanced tools like Airflow or Guided Biofilm Treatment where appropriate making the experience more thorough and more comfortable.

Finally, we coach you. You'll receive a personalised oral hygiene plan with advice on brushing tools, techniques, and habits and at every future visit, we re-measure your scores to track progress. Your comfort is a priority in every appointment. We use warm water - not cold, which eliminates the most common source of discomfort during hygiene treatment. If needed, we apply numbing gels or local anaesthetic to ensure even sensitive areas feel calm and manageable. We can also do the entire treatment using Airflow polishing which is more gentle and comfortable.

GBT begins with a biofilm disclosure (we stain the biofilm so we can see exactly where the bacteria are hiding), then systematically removes biofilm, stains and soft deposits - even around tight spaces, implants, braces or restorations in a minimally‑invasive, sensitive‑friendly way. Finally, we gently debride any harder deposits, polish where needed, and pair the session with personalised oral‑hygiene advice.
